The Australian Greens have warned the Government against incentivising and prioritising university research for commercial ventures.

"The current funding system is certainly problematic, but suggestions that research should be linked to commercial imperative, expose this government's warped priorities for the sector," the Greens spokesperson on Higher Education, Senator Robert Simms said.

The Australian Greens say the Overseas Debt Recovery Bill, which passed the Senate last night, will raise a pittance compared to other potential measures and exposes the Federal Government's warped priorities.

Individuals who have a HELP/TSL bill and are currently travelling overseas, or intending to travel overseas for more than 6 months after the commencement of the bill will have to register with the Australian Tax Office. Failure to do so would mean the individual was failing to comply with tax law and would be punishable.

The Australian Greens are calling on the Government to ban brokers in the VET FEE HELP system in light of an paltry 8% graduation rate.

"It is a terrible indictment on a broken system that only 8% of students who start a course are likely to finish it," the Greens Higher Education Spokesperson, Senator Robert Simms said.

New research from the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCEVER) shows that students attending externally, who are not employed and who are undertaking a course at advanced diploma level have an 8% probability of completing their course.

The Australian Greens have renewed their calls for the Government to drop their deregulation agenda entirely and focus on fixing the funding crisis facing our universities.

Greens spokesperson for Higher Education, Senator Robert Simms, has welcomed the Vice Chancellor of University of New South Wales, Ian Jacobs, speaking out against deregulation.

The Australian Greens have called on the Government to completely overhaul the for-profit VET sector in response to Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull's comments the sector is a ‘shambles'.

Mr Turnbull made the comment during a press conference in Launceston, and highlighted the sector was providing poor quality courses and poor student outcomes.

Greens spokesperson on Higher Education, Robert Simms, called on the Government to stop tinkering around the edges and overhaul the broken system.

The Greens have slammed Unique College for ripping-off vulnerable young people and leaving Australian taxpayers to foot the bill.

"I am disappointed that yet another for-profit VET provider has been found to be selling vulnerable students an expensive yet worthless course while leaving taxpayers to foot the bill," Senator Simms said.

The Australian Greens call on Department of Education to track VET FEE-HELP funding to for-profit RTOs over concerns that profit margins and brokerage fees are being put ahead of student outcomes.

The Department of Education revealed to Greens spokesperson for Higher Education, Robert Simms, in estimates yesterday that the Department isn't monitoring how public money is being spent.

"I am deeply concerned about the lack of oversight over the public money being poured into for-profit VET providers," Senator Simms said.
