Evocca College's attempt to blame students in poor taste

The Australian Greens have slammed the for-profit Evocca College's submission to the parliamentary inquiry into its VET-FEE HELP reform legislation that calls for a lowering of the repayment threshold.

Greens spokesperson on Higher Education, Senator Robert Simms has said the call by Evocca College to lower the VET Fee-Help repayment threshold to between $30,000 and $40,000, compared to the current rate of $54,000, is an attempt by the college to shift the blame for rorting and explosion of costs onto students.

The Australian Greens have called for a curbing of dodgy practises by for-profit VET providers.

The Greens spokesperson on Higher Education, Senator Robert Simms, said claims by whistleblower Liam Hyland that he was asked to sell courses to vulnerable people responding to a fake job advert are emblematic of a toxic culture.

"This is just the latest in a long line of for-profit VET providers being accused of rorting and pushing courses onto vulnerable Australians," Senator Robert Simms said.

The Australian Greens say the Overseas Debt Recovery Bill, which passed the Senate last night, will raise a pittance compared to other potential measures and exposes the Federal Government's warped priorities.

Individuals who have a HELP/TSL bill and are currently travelling overseas, or intending to travel overseas for more than 6 months after the commencement of the bill will have to register with the Australian Tax Office. Failure to do so would mean the individual was failing to comply with tax law and would be punishable.

Greens call on Government to ban private brokers

The Australian Greens are calling on the Government to ban brokers in the VET FEE HELP system in light of an paltry 8% graduation rate.

"It is a terrible indictment on a broken system that only 8% of students who start a course are likely to finish it," the Greens Higher Education Spokesperson, Senator Robert Simms said.

New research from the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCEVER) shows that students attending externally, who are not employed and who are undertaking a course at advanced diploma level have an 8% probability of completing their course.

Fix the for-profit VET ‘shambles'

The Australian Greens have called on the Government to completely overhaul the for-profit VET sector in response to Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull's comments the sector is a ‘shambles'.

Mr Turnbull made the comment during a press conference in Launceston, and highlighted the sector was providing poor quality courses and poor student outcomes.

Greens spokesperson on Higher Education, Robert Simms, called on the Government to stop tinkering around the edges and overhaul the broken system.
